Greetings from the Harraseeket Inn! One of the best things about vacationing in Maine is that you don’t have to go very far to get away from it all, and with gas prices climbing, this could be the year to forego the trip to Europe and take the kids on an adventure a little closer to home. Why not make a pilgrimage to the Allagash, meet some friends at Moosehead Lake for a cruise on the venerable Katahdin, raft the Kennebec,
climb Old Speck or camp beside a remote lake and listen to the loons? Try your hand digging a few clams at low tide, picking wild blueberries on a windswept knoll overlooking the bay or unfurling the sails of a Maine windjammer sailing out of Camden Harbor. Take in a foot stomping bluegrass festival, go moose watching with your camera, enjoy a lobster bake on the shore of a rocky salt water cove.
What do all these things have to do with Freeport? Everything. We’re just two hours driving time from Boston and two blocks from L.L. Bean, where you can outfit yourself for every imaginable adventure. Our scenic town boasts over two hundred outlet shops, a multitude of fabulous eateries and a coastline pretty enough to make your heart sing. Give us a call at 800-342-6423 and we’ll help you plan the vacation of a lifetime, whether it’s an outdoor adventure, a quiet, romantic interlude here at the inn, or the best of both. Try our spring menus in the Broad Arrow Tavern and sample Chef Gallit Sammon’s new small plate menu in the MDR which is getting rave reviews. Check out our new packages at www.harraseeketinn.com including “The Royal Treatment”, featuring a day long pampering at Salon Freeport, just the ticket to soothe the fast paced stress of a frenzied life and ease you into a Maine state of mind. Be sure and make reservations soon for our spectacular Mother’s Day Brunch, or you just might spend the day in the dog house. Speaking of dogs, we’ve updated our Pet Friendly page using Roger Dodger from the Coastal Humane Society as our official spokes dog. Check out his bio, he’s really a cool dog. One week after our photo shoot, he was on Oprah! How cool is that?
May 10 and 11 is Spring Discovery Weekend at L.L.Bean, featuring clinics on fitness, gardening, birding and flycasting. On Memorial Day weekend L.L. Bean is holding an Outdoor Family Fun weekend with demos and clinics on camping, hiking, and family activities. Check out the May calendar at www.freeportusa.com Gardening tip of the month: Blue hydrangeas need muric acid to get that true blue color, but real Mainers use pieces of rusty metal buried three inches deep around the drip line. Works great and is wicked cheap. This month’s trivia question hearkens back to the mechanical heroes of our snowy winter: What Maine town has the biggest springtime snow plow parade? First correct answer wins dinner for two in the MDR or Broad Arrow Tavern. Good luck and hope to see you soon!
